Choose A Domain Name and Hosting You Need

I have decided to move one of my existing hosting to a cheaper hosting provider who’s able to offer something similar with about 50% off the original cost. Well, it’s nothing biggie to most as it’s a norm these days to look for services of lower cost.

Anyway, this post is intended for newbies who wanted to start a hosting of their own and have little knowledge on choosing the right hosting for your needs, hope this can serve as your start-up guide.

Domain name. This might sound simple but it’s an important one. If you are doing a niched site, always stick to the topic and try to get a simple name that is closely related to the topic. If you are just doing a hobby / personal site, try to get something simple and catchy. Try to make it short and sweet. Long and complicated names are strictly a No-No. Remember, your domain name is like YOUR brand. When it’s simple and catchy, your visitor will remember it easily. A domain name these days cost less than USD10 annually. If a registrar is charging more than that, look again.

Start small. Small here refers to the size of the available space as well as the overall data transfer bandwidth. If you are just starting a hobby / personal site, relatively about 300 Mb – 500 Mb of space should be sufficient. For the bandwidth, a size between 4Gb – 5Gb should be enough for you to start up with. It’s pointless to buy a lot of space / bandwidth when you are not using those. Why pay more, right? If your site’s popularity increases and you need more space / bandwidth, those can always be upgraded / increased later on.

Cost. This is one of the major consideration for most. Generally, it’s pretty cheap these days to own your own hosting. As a start to look for cheap hosting providers, just go to www.Google.Com and try searching “cheap hosting”. You’ll get a long list which you can check and compare the prices. Just choose the one that suit your need the most and with a reasonable / affordable price.
